Heumann Red Blend, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc

This concentrated, yet beautifully balanced and complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), and Cabernet Franc (10%) comes from Hungary’s premier red wine region of Villány, in the southwest of Hungary. Grapes come from the Siklós’ Városhegy, Márfa’s Hegytető, and Vokány’ Trinitás vineyards. All of the sites have loess in common, with Városhegy containing an especially high proportion of limestone, which adds extra structure-building acidity that delivers both acidity and freshness to delightfully cut through the wine’s intense southern ripeness. This wine was fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks at 28-30°C, then aged in Hungarian barriques (225 liters) and double barriques (500 liters) for 24 months. It has a deep, vivid ruby color, pronounced aromas of tobacco, earthiness, autumn leaves, dark chocolate, plum, black fruit, and dried fruit, with similar flavors following on the palate. It’s very well-crafted—a Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend, with a southern Hungarian twist—and is maturing beautifully. It has expertly integrated oak and fabulous fine-grained tannins and structured acidity fleshing out the layered, juicy, and rich palate, with cherry liqueur, dark chocolate, and winter spices on the finish. It is great with all manner of red meat dishes. The winery is owned by a German-Swiss couple, Erhard & Evelyne Heumann, while the winemaker, András Theisz, is Hungarian.
