“Vároldal” Brut Nature – Egly Szőlőbirtok

This Méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine is a revival of a traditional plantation of local grapes that traces back to 1574. With his own hands, winemaker Márk Egly replanted this historical vineyard on the slopes of the Sümeg Castle’s hillside with only indigenous grape varieties that were grown there back in the 16th century. These varietals include Sárfehér, Lisztesfehér, Góhér, Bakator, Bajor Kék, Csóka, Rak, Feketeleányka, and Furmint. The base wine for this sparkler was made using carefully selected, top-quality grapes which were fermented and matured using low intervention processing. It was then aged in a mixture of amphorae and French barrels for one year before being processed according to the standard Méthode traditionnelle. This unique sedimentary soil defines the profile of fruitiness and fresh chalkiness, and it all leads up to a multilayered, long-lasting finish. A mere 500 bottles were produced, all individually numbered for authenticity. This is a sparkling wine for special occasions.

The appellation of Sümeg is located within the Balaton-felvidék (Balaton Uplands) wine region approximately 20 km. north of Lake Balaton. Comprising only 11 hectares, this young PDO is the smallest in Hungary as of 2023. While the Castle of Sümeg is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, the steep slopes of the 270-meter-tall Castle Hill are also an excellent site for viticulture. These slopes are mostly marl and limestone, and this soil composition is reflected in the minerality of the area’s wines. Olaszrizling is the most planted varietal closely followed by Furmint, Kékfrankos, and Zweigelt.
