Arridens – Egly Szőlőbirtok
The uniqueness of this rosé lies in its biodynamic viticulture and natural production process. It’s a blend of four different grapes: Kékfrankos, Zweigelt, Furmint, and Merlot. The wine was fermented and matured in an egg-shaped concrete vessel and then bottled after nine months of aging on fine lees in accordance with the lunar cycle. It’s completely natural, unfiltered, and unfined. In addition to its bright notes of strawberry and raspberry, the terroir characteristics of Sümeg DHC (limestone, flint, and clay) are definitely detectable on the nose as well. The palate is fruity, spicy and mineral all at once, and it rounds off with crisp acidity. Hortobágyi palacsinta (savory Hungarian crêpes with meaty filling) with a dollop of sour cream would be the perfect pairing partner for it.

The appellation of Sümeg is located within the Balaton-felvidék (Balaton Uplands) wine region approximately 20 km. north of Lake Balaton. Comprising only 11 hectares, this young PDO is the smallest in Hungary as of 2023. While the Castle of Sümeg is one of the main tourist attractions in the area, the steep slopes of the 270-meter-tall Castle Hill are also an excellent site for viticulture. These slopes are mostly marl and limestone, and this soil composition is reflected in the minerality of the area’s wines. Olaszrizling is the most planted varietal closely followed by Furmint, Kékfrankos, and Zweigelt.
