Sauvignon Blanc – Hernyák Birtok
The ever-popular Sauvignon Blanc grape is also found in Hungary, growing on about 2,500 acres of vineyards, including a bit of it grown organically on the Hernyák’s property in Etyek. Sauvignon Blanc is the most popular still wine in the Etyek region, and over the years the Hernyáks have become masterful at coaxing their Sauvignon Blanc into something very special. In 2005 this wine won a Grand Gold Medal at Hungary’s national wine competition, with the highest score in its category. No other Etyek wine has since matched that achievement! This wine is inspired by the Sauvignon Blancs of the Loire Valley, but is a pure expression of Etyek’s cool-climate weather and limestone soil. This is a fresh, vibrant, and youthful wine. “This variety thrives where sunlight is softer and the climate helps preserve its lively aromatics,” according to the Hernyák family. “To protect freshness, we farm with extra canopy, harvest early, and vinify entirely reductively in chilled stainless steel tanks.” This is a crisp and refreshing wine, and very fun to drink. To say that it is simply an easy-drinking wine, however, would be a disservice since it also has quite a lot of substance to it.
