Noblesse Chardonnay – Malatinszky Kúria
Although Villány is a region best known for its reds, winemaker Csaba Malatinszky experimented with white varieties from the beginning. In 2003, he finally found the ideal path for his Chardonnay and has followed that road ever since. This wine is the result of three different batches that underwent separate fermentations, battonage (lees stirring), and maturation. They were blended together at the time of bottling to give this wine multiple dimensions which converge to create a single entity.
This is neither an easy-drinking, unoaked Chardonnay nor the buttery, full-bodied style found in new-world countries. Malatinszky’s Noblesse Chardonnay strikes a lovely balance between the two. The nose displays plenty of fruit (yellow apple, peach, meyer lemon) as well as some brioche and vanilla. The palate is marked with crisp acidity, a medium body, and chalky minerality with some nuttiness on the long finish.
We recommend serving this wine alongside your favorite seafood, especially lobster or scallops. It would match perfectly with meaty dishes like veal, pulled pork, or brassói aprópecsenye (seasoned pork and potatoes made in the Brasov style).
