Altberg – Hernyák Birtok
This blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc is the Hernyák family’s flagship wine, and they only produce it in exceptional vintages, and in extremely limited quantities (600 bottles). Grapes come from the family’s finest Öreghegy vineyard parcels, and the wine is a field blend—which means that both grape varieties are harvested, processed, and vinified together. After de-stemming the grapes, they are left to soak overnight in the press, and are then gently pressed the following morning. The juice is fermented in oak barrels, with a weekly stirring of the lees throughout the winter in order to enhance the wine’s texture, depth, and longevity. The Hernyák Estate has been farming organically since 2015, and they use minimal sulfur in their winemaking. After bottling, this wine is aged for at least 12 months in the bottle before being released. The result is a wine with complex layers, showing Etyek’s signature minerality and cool-climate acidity. After a bit of a shy nose, you’ll find aromas of toasted hazelnut, citrus, chamomile, and sourdough, with some apricot and rhubarb compote.
