Szászi Zeus

Endre Szaszi is a pioneer winemaker for the Badacsony region. His career in the wine business began when he opened a wine store in Badacsony in 1995. He bought barrels of wine from different producers and bottled the wines exclusively for his store. He quickly realized that the quality of the wines he was buying was changing dramatically from year to year. He understood that he could not control the quality of the wines he was selling unless he produced them himself. So in the late 1990s he bought a vineyard on Szent György hill in Badacsony, and he started producing wines. He was probably the first organic producer in Badacsony in the 1990s. At the time, people made fun of him for not using pesticides and fungicides in his vineyards. These days, the great majority of Badacsony’s wineries farm their vineyards organically. Szászi produced his first orange wine in 2019. It is made with 100 percent of the Zeus variety—a crossing of Ezerjó and Bouvier, made in the 1950s. Only 250 bottles were made! The wine (14 percent alcohol) was bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with the addition of very little sulfur. This is the wine to try with those hard-to-pair foods such as grilled vegetables, asparagus, and pumpkin. It can also be a great companion to potato-based dishes and curries
