This is the jewel of the crown—the wine that Hungarians sing about in their national anthem. And this was the last exceptional vintage of the 2010s. It’s a rich, concentrated, fruity, and fresh dessert wine. The sweetness (160 grams/liter of residual sugar) is balanced by a high level of acidity (8 grams /liter of acidity). It has flavors and aromas of dried apricot, acacia honey, orange marmalade, and candied ginger. It is amazing with the classic Aszú pairings—blue cheese and foie gras. The Royal Tokaji Winery was established in the early 1990s, right after the the end of Communism, by Hugh Johnson, the British wine-writer. It is located in the historical and prestigious town of Mád, in the heart of the Tokaj wine region. The winery quickly became one of the area’s most influential and well-known producers. With 107 hectares, they are also one of the region’s biggest land-owners. Royal Tokaji has gained a good international and local reputation, and one of their wines, also from 2013, recently earned 100 points in Wine Spectator. A true classic.
